Viikki temporary library opens its doors 14 September 

Viikki Library was closed in July due to extensive water damage. From 14 September onwards, the library’s services will continue at temporary facilities, which will provide customers with access to key library services while the Viikki Library building undergoes repairs. The temporary library is open on weekdays.

Viikki Library will open a temporary library on Monday 14 September. The temporary library is located at Viikinkaari 2, in the lobby of the former Viikki Environment House, a few minutes’ walk away from Viikki Library. There are entrances to the temporary library on both the Viikinkaari and Viikintie sides.

The temporary library is easily accessible by public transport: there are stops nearby for light rail 15 and bus routes 57, 78 and 79. 

The temporary library offers basic services 

The temporary library is approximately a quarter of the size of Viikki Library, but provides access to the library’s key basic services. Customers can collect their reservations, return items and borrow books from a small collection for children, young people and adults. In addition to this, the temporary library has a computer for customers to use and offers printing, photocopying and scanning services. You can also read newspapers and magazines in the temporary library. 

Reservations made at Viikki Library can be collected from the temporary library from 14 September onwards. 

Services for local daycare centres and schools 

Due to the limited size of the temporary library, it does not have a separate lounge or study area. For this reason, visits by daycare and school groups cannot be arranged at the temporary library. However, local schools and daycare centres will be supported in many other ways while the Viikki Library building undergoes repairs. 

Services to 1st-graders in the Viikki area will be provided via a mobile library. In addition to this, storytelling sessions will be held at youth centres in the area, and schools and daycare centres can order ready-made book sets for their use. 

The temporary library is open on weekdays 

The opening hours of the temporary library have been arranged to cater for both early risers and those who visit in the evenings. The library is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 12.00 to 19.00 and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00 to 16.00. For the time being, the library is not open at weekends. Self-service is not possible in the temporary library. 

The repair of Viikki Library is currently underway and is expected to continue until at least the end of 2026. The exact date of the library’s reopening is not yet known, but according to current estimates, operations at the temporary library will continue at least until January–February 2027.
