A library card for a child

There is no minimum age limit for acquiring a library card for a child; you can get a library card for a really small child, too. An under-15-year-old child needs a guardian’s consent to get a library card, and the child’s card is linked to the guardian’s library card. Therefore, the guardian is responsible for material borrowed on the child’s card.
When you come to fetch a library card for the child, bring with you a filled-out application form and the child’s KELA card (a card without a photo is sufficient) or passport. You can fill out the application at the library or print it out in advance and fill it out at home. Furthermore, the child must be with you when the card is made. If you don’t have a library card yourself, bring your ID with you. Your information will be added to the library system because you, as the guardian, are responsible for the child’s card. You yourself can also get a library card at the same time.
The first library card is free of charge. The same library card is valid at all libraries in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen.
